BUNDLE: (Fake) True Crime

  • 5 films

Rent all 5 films in the Swinburne student-curated (Fake) True Crime program.

Our season revolves around an appreciation of the cinema of crime, and a look through the history of the genre. The season includes classic films from the 1970’s to modern day reinterpretations of the genre and even international masterclasses of the thematic. This season is curated as a love letter to the exemplars of the theme of crime and is a way to celebrate the genre’s recent prevalence within popular culture.

“Fake” True Crime, in the context of the season, revolves around the idea that any of the fictional films we have chosen for the season could fit into a true crime setting, due to either the mentality of the characters (Death on The Nile), the striking realism of some of the acts committed in these films (Memories of Murder), or of depictions of domestic violence (Blood Simple), the exploitation of crime as entertainment (Nightcrawler) and even the loss of innocence (Paddington 2).

These films give the audience a modern and postmodern contextual understanding of the genre and allow them to appreciate not only the films in this season but also come away with a greater knowledge of how the genre is explored over the decades.

Curated by Swinburne students: Minh Hieu Nguyen, Stephanie Popovski, Janelle Saurajen, Steven Sofianopoulos, Tayla Stevenson, Mitchell Stuckey and Lycia Tuballas.
