Complement your in-cinema viewing of It Takes Time: Ten Films by Frederick Wiseman with a Wiseman Masterclass, hosted for a limited time on ACMI’s online platform, Cinema 3.
Recorded in May 2022 exclusively for the 10-film Frederick Wiseman retrospective screening at ACMI, the Sydney Film Festival and NFSA over Winter 2022, the masterclass features a lively and in-depth conversation with the prolific Wiseman, moderated by Australian documentary film director and producer, Ian Darling.
As part of a wide-ranging exchange of ideas, Wiseman discusses his formative years as a filmmaker, elaborates on elements of his process, including his preferred approaches to shooting and editing, and revisits the contentious post-production history that impacted the distribution of his early classic, Titicut Follies (1967).
A selection of films screening in the film season are referenced with clips, including from City Hall (2020), Belfast, Maine (1999) and Welfare (1975) in an informative, generous-spirited, and expansive conversation that will interest and excite students, makers and aficionados of ‘reality fiction’ alike.
