‘Dulce et decorum est, pro patria mori’ or rather ‘It’s sweet and fitting to die for one’s country’ – Wilfred Owen.
Our program was conceived around Owen’s idea but we wanted to focus on a different aspect: empathy for victims and those without a voice. High Ground (2020), La Haine (1995), The Forgiveness of Blood (2011), Selma (2014) and A Private War (2018) perfectly represent what we are trying to achieve in this program. Viewers are encouraged to not only reflect upon the history of human conflict, the nature of that conflict and its different faces throughout history, but to also ask the question ‘what can I do to help?’.
In the words of Wilfred Owen, it’s sweet and fitting to die for one’s country. But what of those who only wished to live?
Curated by Swinburne students: Lewis Affleck, Mitchell Baker, Joe Bosa, Ashleigh Clarke and Shao-Hwei Crewe.
