Flashback: Innovative Historical Biopics, is a collection of five films which showcase a creative way to observe historic narratives.
These films have made innovations to the genre of biopics through their distinct take on true stories. The films in the collection not only focus on the historical flashback, but also highlight a cinematic timeline by flashing forward. Including both new releases and older films, the program highlights both box office successes, and films overlooked in lists of significant biographical films, despite their innovation. This collection aims to capitalise on the success of the recent Oscar-nominated biopic films such as Spencer (2021) and House of Gucci (2021).
These five films have been presented in timeline order based on the year(s) of their real life inspirations, flowing from The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc (1999) and through to Nitram (2021). By bringing these films together, a wide geographical area is explored, and a flashback of history is experienced whilst illuminating the future of the genre made possible by these films.
