Sparkles
A proud disabled woman makes her own way in the world. Sparkles is an award-winning triumph for writer, star and co-producer Tina Fielding. Along with director Jacqueline Pelczar, Cody Greenwood, Producer and Rush Films.
Tina has the cultural authorship to tell this story. As part of the telling of the story there is use of derogatory slang language.
Flaunt Guest Curator, Kath Duncan shares her take on the film in the bonus content below.
Sparkles has won so many awards for writing, directing and performance that we can’t list them all! It’s won in Australia, Canada, the UK, and other film hot spots. What’s most powerful about this film is writer and performer Tina’s characterisation. Of a young disabled woman who escapes from drudgery and dysfunction at home. To embrace a much bigger world. It’s a camp road trip with real purpose and meaning. Kath Duncan says, “It spoke to me of that yearning a lot of Deaf and disabled people have. To blast the low expectations people have of us and follow our stars”.
Back in 2018 we first met Tina Fielding when she was on a screen storytelling panel at The Other Film Festival in West Australia. Tina spoke about her dream to make a short film, and which has become Sparkles. It is very exciting, as currently Tina and her key creative team from Sparkles and Rush Films are in post-production on Out Of Here. An on-line series written by and starring Tina and funded by Screenwest and Screen Australia. Out Of Here is about a young, gay woman living with Down syndrome who goes to Gay Pride to find ‘her people’ and ends up having a wild and colourful adventure with new friends and finds her first love.
Bring it on Tina, we cannot wait to see Out Of Here and what you do next in the Australian screen industry!
