Cold War

1h 28m Drama 2018

A passionate love story between two people of different backgrounds and temperaments, who are fatally mismatched and yet condemned to each other. Set against the background of the Cold War in the 1950s in Poland, Berlin, Yugoslavia and Paris, the film depicts an impossible love story in impossible times.

Celebrated for its crisp black and white cinematography, the decision to keep colour absent from Cold War was integral to its overall message. “In Poland, there was no color in those days, in those years. Everything was black and white,” says Director of Photography Lukasz Żal. For his work, Żal earned a nomination best cinematography at the 2018 Academy Awards. This was his second nomination after being nominated for his work on Pawel Pawlikowski’s Ida in 2015, also shot in black and white.
