Kindling

13m Coming of Age 2025

Set against the rugged landscape of Victoria’s Bass Coast, Kindling follows Lil, a young woman secretly in love with her childhood best friend, Louis. As they spend a secluded, frosty day together – building a fire, plunging into the surf and relishing each other’s company – Lil searches for signs that her feelings might be returned. Through fleeting silences, playful exchanges and their shared connection to the landscape that surrounds them, the pair must navigate the subtle tugs between desire and friendship, and are left to ponder: is love stronger when it isn’t acted upon?

A tender observation of companionship, Kindling reveals the soft beauty of a deeper, enduring connection, and explores how some flames are not meant to be lit.

Director bio:

Sara Taylor is a writer/director and graduating Bachelor of Fine Arts (Film and Television) student at the Victorian College of the Arts with a passion for candid, relatable storytelling. As a young female filmmaker, she is drawn to the quiet, unspoken currents that drift between people – the gestures, silences and emotions that reveal what words cannot. Through a distinctly female lens, she explores intimacy, connection and identity in her work, often grounded in the uniquely Australian coming-of-age experience and the landscapes that shape it. Through her films, she seeks to explore the human heart with honesty and warmth, inviting audiences to reflect on love, friendship, fear and the choices that define us.
