Newsfront

1h 50m Feature, Drama 1978

Bill Hunter and Gerard Kennedy play rival news makers in the restored Australian classic by director Phillip Noyce.

The Australian movie classic based on the lives of the newsreel cameramen of the golden era of newsreels (1948–56) seamlessly integrates archival footage of the era with dramatic reconstructions. Bill Hunter and Gerard Kennedy play brothers working for rival newsreel companies in the decade before television fundamentally changed the entertainment industry.

Wendy Hughes, John Ewart, Chris Haywood and Bryan Brown also distinguish themselves in a strong ensemble. Adapted for the screen by Phillip Noyce from an original screenplay by Bob Ellis, Newsfront marked Noyce’s impressive debut as a feature film director.

“Rightfully remembered as one of Bill Hunter’s pedigree performances… [Noyce’s] first-class film… very much stands the test of time” – The Guardian
