Nice Jewish Girl

11m Coming of Age, Queer 2025

At a Jewish school camp in 2006, repressed teenager Tali finds a porn magazine hidden in a classmate’s prayer book and steals it. Between the pages and behind the closed doors of the girls’ cabin, she begins to question her sexuality. When her friends return to the cabin later that night, the conversation turns to hook-ups with boys; and, amid simmering tensions, the magazine is uncovered.

Seeking refuge in the bathroom, Tali is chanced upon by her friend Mim, who has just had an unsatisfying encounter with a boy named Josh. After the two girls share an unexpected moment of intimacy, Tali’s thoughts are torn between Mim and Josh, and she decides to take action.

Director bio:

Carly Brand is a writer and director based in Naarm/Melbourne. In 2024, she began studying a Master of Film and Television (Filmmaking) at VCA, where she writes and directs projects that amplify the voices of women in front of and behind the camera. Her lens is that of a queer, Jewish woman, a unique perspective that underscores her approach to storytelling.

Previously, she ran her own copywriting studio for 10 years, where she developed the narratives and creative direction for local and global brands. She continues to believe that words can be utilised as both shields and weapons, that subtext reveals our true desires, and that through film we’re able to deeply connect with others and with ourselves.
