Some Kind of Blue
After moving into her late mother’s home by the beach, Indiana (Rainbow Chan) a musician is confronted by another kind of loss. Increasingly Indiana experiences phantom noises, obstructive neighbourhood sounds and mysterious visitations. When she learns that she’s losing her hearing, the discovery unearths grief around her mother’s death. Only in surrendering to the waves of grief - both real and metaphorical - can Indiana begin to heal.
This film is inspired by writer/director Rae Choi’s own experiences with finding out that she is hard-of-hearing in her adult age. SOME KIND OF BLUE is a beautiful and powerful short film that masterfully builds on Rae’s directorial debut WHEN THE SKY WAS BLUE. This film was part of the 2023 TOFF program, Resistance.
“The film is a meditation on absence and presence, the narratives we construct in our confusion, and the mysteries we chase when answers elude us. SOME KIND OF BLUE is deeply personal, but it also reflects a universal truth: love and loss leave an indelible mark, shaping who we are and how we move through the world” (Rae Choi).
Rae Choi is a Chinese-Australian filmmaker. Her short and long-form work, filmed in Australia, Japan, Italy and France, has screened at various international film festivals and broadcast in Australia and the UK.
