The Good Husband

15m Science Fiction 2025

William, a 65-year-old pianist, has been in love with his wife – who is 30 years his junior – for many years. Facing deteriorating health, he chooses with her encouragement to undergo a groundbreaking procedure to transfer his consciousness into a younger body. At first, everything seems perfect, but subtle flaws from the operation emerge: he finds himself losing part of his ability to play the piano; while his wife’s growing sense of distance toward the ‘new’ William, and her tenderness towards the ‘old’ William’s body, begin to challenge his role as a husband. Living under the same roof, the three of them become entangled in a strange and delicate relationship: one marriage, in which a single mind is shared across two bodies.

Created with 40 per cent virtual production and enhanced by AI-generated concept maps and storyboard previsualisation, The Good Husband blends intimate human drama with speculative science fiction, using new technology to achieve greater control and cinematic texture on a modest budget.

Director bio:

Kime (Baoquan) Cheng is a Melbourne-based filmmaker blending human drama with speculative science fiction.

A graduate of the second Virtual Production Workshop at the Beijing Film Academy and now pursuing a Master of Film and Television (Filmmaking) at the VCA, he integrates virtual production, AI concept design and previsualisation into his work. Before focusing on cinema, Kime worked at Dentsu Creative and other leading 4A agencies, collaborating with major brands. His commercial work has repeatedly ranked among the top of New Studios’ creative charts, and he was the youngest recipient of Greater China’s Employee of the Year at Dentsu Creative.

In recent years, he has turned his focus to science fiction, exploring identity, memory and technology’s impact on human connection. His latest film, The Good Husband, uses 40 per cent virtual production to craft a visually striking, emotionally layered near-future story.
